FromthefirstminuteIreadATaleOfTwoCitiesforward,Ihavebeeninlovewiththisbook.Thechapterwhichimpressedmemostisneither"TheGreatEscape"nor"Revolution",it's"TheKnittingIsFinished",whichI'dliketocallMissProssPKMadameDefarge.
AsMrLorryhaddrivenacarriageinwhichlayDarnayandhisfamiliestoescapefromParis,MissProssandJerryCruncher,theoneswhowereleftbecausethecarriagecouldn'tbeoverloaded,hadtoorderanothercarriageforthemselves.WhenMissProsswaspreparingthingsaloneinthehouse,afigureappearedunexpectedly,makinghercryout.ItwasMadameDefarge,whocamehereaimingforLucieandthechild.MadameDefargeknewwellthatthiswomanwasatrustedfriendofthefamilyandMissProssknewthattheotherwomanwasthefamily'senemy.Thenthecombatbetweentwowomanbegan.
MissProsswasoneofthosewomanwhothoughtnothingoftheirownneedsandwho,throughpureloveandadmiration,arereadytomakethemselvesslavestoyouthwhentheyhavelostit,tobeautywhichtheyhaveneverhad,andtobrighthopesthathavenevershoneupontheirowndark***.AsMrLorrysaid,"thereisnothingbetterintheworldthanthehonestserviceoftheheart".SinceMissProsshadbecomelikeamothertoLucieandwouldhavegivenherlifeforher,shewoulddoeverythingshecouldtokeepMadameDefargeinthehousesothatthecarriagecarryingLuciecouldrunfarther.
MadameDefargewasawomanwithaverykeeneye,astrongfaceandagreatcalmnessofmanner.WhentheFrenchRevolutionbrokeout,itwasherwholedthewomanandcutofftheheadofthegovernoroftheprison.Shehadastrong,fealessandakindofbeautythatcalledattentiontoherqualities.Shehadgrownupwithadeepsenseofwrongandapowerfulhatredofthearisyocracy;anypitythatsheoncemayhavehadwasnow***.Toher,Darnay'sfamilymustbedestroyed,thewifeandchildmustfollowthefather.
Bothweredeterminedwomanintheirdifferentways.HatredhadmadetheheartoftheFrenchwomanhard;lovenowfiledtheEnglishwoman'swith***.It'sveryintereingtoseethateachwomanspokeinherownlanguageandneitherunderstoodawordofwhattheothersaidwhileeachknewwelltheother'sintention.
